A professional book cover design typically costs anywhere from $200 to $800 for a solid indie designer, and can go significantly higher for more established designers or complex illustrated covers. Pre-made covers are a cheaper option — you can find them in the $50 to $150 range — and they're a legitimate choice if you're working with a tight budget and find one that fits your book well. Just know that pre-made covers are sold to multiple authors, so there's no exclusivity.
Interior Formatting — The Cost of Looking Professional Inside
Interior book formatting is the part readers interact with on every single page, and it's chronically undervalued by authors who've never held a poorly formatted book next to a well-formatted one.
Professional interior formatting typically runs from $150 to $500 depending on the length and complexity of your manuscript — a straightforward novel is simpler than a non-fiction book with images, charts, and multiple heading levels. What you're getting is a book that reads cleanly, meets print specifications, and looks like it came from a traditional publishing house rather than something assembled in a word processor.

ISBNs — A Small but Real Cost
If you're publishing through Amazon KDP only, you can use a free ISBN from KDP. The catch is that it ties you to Amazon — the publisher of record on that ISBN is KDP, not you.
If you want to publish across multiple platforms — IngramSpark, Barnes and Noble Press, Apple Books — or if you want to own your ISBNs as an independent publisher, you'll need to purchase your own through Bowker in the US. A single ISBN is $125. A block of ten is $295, which makes more sense if you're planning to publish multiple books or multiple editions.
This is a real cost that often catches first-time self-publishers off guard.
Marketing — The Ongoing Expense Nobody Budgets For
Publishing the book is just the beginning. Getting it in front of readers is its own investment entirely.
Amazon advertising, book promotion sites like BookBub, review campaigns, social media content, an author website — none of this is free, and most successful self-published authors spend more on marketing over the life of a book than they spent on production.
